More than 15 years ago, I went to a coffee shop that had a bookshop attached to it. I think it was in Woodend or a similar country town. As you can imagine, I was a little bit excited about that combination. I toyed with the dream of owning my own bookshop-café, which shows that books have always been my life way before I got into publishing.
I have a few ideas for the future that extend that idea further but I won’t share them yet. They are still brewing. But our studio gallery grew from this seed. I liked the idea of people gathering to share their love of books and writing and I know that when people visit this space that they get into a creative mindset.
Funny how dreams can grow and morph into something different but equally satisfying.
Within our beautiful, creative working space, we have our monthly open mic nights. This truly is a welcoming, creative place where like-minded people can hang out. Proof of this is the fact that every month (third Wednesday) we consistently have 30 people gather to enjoy a variety of written (and sung) material. We have seen so many people grow and improve their work by sharing it and becoming more confident in getting up in front of people.
My point? If you manifest something, it will happen. And if you go about it in a heart-centred way, it will give back in more ways than you can count. And for whatever you are doing in your life, gathering a tribe of like-minded people will make it all the more satisfying.
My aha moment came last December when we had a table set up for Christmas celebrations for our last open mic for the year for about 50 people. It felt like our second family had gathered to celebrate a great year of writing.
Oh, and the extension to this dream is awesome but you’ll have to wait a few years for that. None of this happens overnight and none of it happens without a fantastic team behind you. Go Team Busybird!
